Aurora Boreale

Renato Serra (1884-1915), scrittore e critico letterario, è stato uno dei più brillanti e promettenti intellettuali italiani del primo Novecento, venendo riconosciuto come l’anticipatore della critica stilistica. Allievo di Giosuè Carducci all’Università di Bologna, collaborò con La Voce ed è stato direttore della Biblioteca Malatestiana di Cesena. Autore di importanti saggi e opere letterarie, si arruolò come volontario allo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, rimanendo ucciso in combattimento sul monte Podgora, a soli trent’anni. Il saggio di Renato Serra su Giovanni Pascoli, che oggi riproponiamo all’attenzione dei nostri lettori, risale al 1910 e fa parte degli Scritti Critici editi da La Voce nei suoi Quaderni. Costituisce una delle più belle biografie critiche del grande poeta, scrittore e libero muratore romagnolo, figura emblematica della letteratura italiana di fine Ottocento.

Nelle sue opere su Ipazia di Alessandria, l’esoterista e teosofo pesarese Augusto Agabiti (1879-1918) ha saputo restituire a quella «stella purissima dell’arte della sapienza» la sua reale dimensione di somma iniziata, a tutti gli effetti appartenente al consesso dei diretti eredi della plurimillenaria istituzione religioso-iniziatica di Eleusi e della sua Scuola di Sapienza. La scomparsa di Ipazia rappresentò a livello simbolico molto di più di un barbaro delitto dettato dall’odio, dall’intolleranza e dal calcolo politico; essa rappresentò per la tarda antichità una vera e propria censura temporale che segnò anche l’inizio dell’inesorabile declino di Alessandria come il più grande centro di erudizione dell’antichità mediterranea. L’intera Europa, l’intero Occidente, di riflesso, non sarebbero stati più gli stessi, risvegliandosi sotto una cappa di paura, di intolleranza e di sgomento. Tanto che potremmo tranquillamente affermare - come sostiene lo storico Nicola Bizzi - che il reale inizio della fase storica che chiamiamo Medio Evo possa simbolicamente coincidere con l’assassinio di Ipazia. Nous avons réuni, dans ce volume, intitulé Considérations sur le Symbolisme, deux études fondamentales de René Guénon sur le symbolisme et ses significations, publiées dans la revueRegnabit entre 1926 et 1927. La première des deux études, intitulée Le Verbe et le Symbole, est publiée en Janvier 1926. La seconde, intituléeConsidérations sur le Symbolisme, est publiée en deux parties (Mythes et Symboles et Symbolisme et Philosophie) en Novembre 1926 et Janvier 1927. À notre avis, ce sont quelques-unes des meilleures études sur le symbolisme publiées au XXe siècle. «Le symbolisme est susceptible d'une multitude de modalités diverses; le mythe n'en est qu'un simple cas particulier, constituant une de ces modalités; on pourrait dire que le symbole est le genre, et que le mythe en est une des espèces. En d'autres termes, on peut envisager un récit symbolique, aussi bien et au même titre qu'un dessin symbolique, ou que beaucoup d'autres choses encore qui ont le même caractère et qui jouent le même rôle; les mythes sont des récits symboliques, comme les paraboles évangéliques le sont également; il ne nous semble pas qu'il y ait là matière à la moindre difficulté, dès lors qu'on a bien compris la notion générale du symbolisme».

Richard Bartlett Gregg (1885-1974) was an American philosopher, pacifist and peace activist.  He was one of the first Americans to live and work with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and brought Gandhian philosophy to America in the early 20th century. He wrote extensively on peace and simplicity. His two major works wereThe Power of Non-Violence (first published in 1934) and The Value of Voluntary Simplicity (he coined the term), but he also wrote many other short books and pamphlets. Throughout his life Bartlett Gregg corresponded with numerous important figures of the 20th. Century, including Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Aldous Huxley, Martin Luther King, Reinhold Niebuhr, Bertram Russell, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois and many others. He visited India several times and lived there for a number of years. The Bartlett Gregg's pamphlet Gandhiism versus Socialism was published in New York in 1932. «Gandhiism - wrote Gregg - is superior to Socialism in providing for every person a common daily form of social service to help directly toward creating a new social and economic order». «Gandhiism never gives to the State the paramount power accorded to it by Socialism. The freedom of the human conscience is a priceless treasure which Gandhiji is not prepared to barter for anything else on earth. If he gives to the State a certain measure of obedience it is never with regard to the fundamentals».

La psiche degli animali, il saggio di Piero Martinetti che oggi riproponiamo all’attenzione dei lettori, fu oggetto di una conferenza tenuta dal filosofo nel 1920 presso la Società Milanese di Studi Filosofici e Religiosi. È stato a ragione definito il primo vero libro animalista del Novecento. Sia in esso che in un altro testo successivo, Pietà verso gli animali, Martinetti sosteneva che gli animali, così come gli esseri umani, possiedano intelletto e coscienza, e che quindi l’etica non debba limitarsi alla regolazione dei rapporti infraumani, ma debba altresì necessariamente estendersi a ricercare il benessere e la felicità anche per tutte quelle forme di vita senzienti che come l’uomo sono in grado di provare gioia e dolore. Come ha evidenziato in un suo saggio Angelo Paviolo, «Nella relazione sulla psiche degli animali Martinetti affronta anche il problema dello scandalo morale suscitato dall’indifferenza delle grandi religioni positive occidentali di fronte all’inaudita sofferenza degli animali provocata dagli uomini: gli animali hanno una forma dell’intelligenza e della ragione, sono esseri affini a noi, possiamo leggere nei loro occhi l’unità profonda che ad essi ci lega».

George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher, an anglican bishop and one of the three great British empiricists along with John Locke and David Hume. Ignored and derided in life, he is now widely re-evaluated and considered as a sort of indirect precursor of Ernst Mach, Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr for his thesis on the non-existence of matter and the impossibility of an objectively absolute time and space. His critiques of mathematics and science are among the most controversial, brilliant and revolutionary in the history of philosophy. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), writer, poet, mystic and initiate, was one of the fathers of late medieval Italian literature and one of the greatest protagonists of that Humanism that paved the way for the Renaissance. The Trattatello in laude di Dante, a book whose title is usually translated into English as “The Life of Dante”, written by Boccaccio between 1351 and 1355, represents one of the first real biographies, as we understand them in the most current of meanings. For the drafting of this work, Boccaccio - rightly considered the first lover and admirer of the great poet and initiate Dante Alighieri - having in reality never personally known Dante (who was instead a very close friend of his father, Boccaccino di Chellino), tried his hand in a meticulous search for news, through investigations, testimonies and interviews with people who had known him. The image that Boccaccio gives us of Dante Alighieri is that of a personality pervaded and dripping with spirituality (even if he keeps silent, for understandable reasons, about his initiatory affiliations, which were Pythagorean, Templar and Rosicrucian). William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 - May 11, 1920) was an American novelist, short story writer, literary critic, magazine editor, and mentor who wrote for various magazines, including theAtlantic Monthly and the Harper's Magazine. He played an essential role in shaping the American literary sensibility of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly the shift toward naturalism and realism. Howells' Criticism and Fiction, published in 1891, is a closely argued manifesto for American realism. «Bad criticism is mischievous enough, and I think that much if not most current criticism as practised among the English and Americans is bad, is falsely principled, and is conditioned in evil. It is falsely principled because it is unprincipled, or without principles; and it is conditioned in evil because it is almost wholly anonymous. At the best its opinions are not conclusions from certain easily verifiable principles, but are effects from the worship of certain models».

Hypatia Bradlaugh Bonner (31 March 1858 - 25 August 1935) was a British peace activist, teacher, author, atheist and freethinker, and the daughter of Charles Bradlaugh,a  political activist, the first openly atheist member of British Parliament and founder of the National Secular Society in 1866. In her life she wrote important and fundamental books (The gallows and the lash: an enquiry into the necessity for capital and corporal punishments, 1897; Penalties upon opinion: or, some records of the laws of heresy and blasphemy; 1912;The Christian Hell, 1913; Christianity and conduct, or the influence of religious beliefs on morals, 1919) but is most remembered today for being the author of her father's biography,Charles Bradlaugh: His Life and Work. The slave struggle in America, published around 1880, is the text version of four lectures held by Hypatia Bradlaugh Bonner about the drama of slavery in the New Continent. The lectures refer to the history of slavery in America from the time of George III to the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.
